Ancient Egyptian Sunglasses

October 1st, 2010

I consider myself an amateur Egyptologist. I enjoy studying the culture, religion and art. I came up with this theory that I thought I would share this week.

The Ancient Egyptians and many other cultures used to use a mineral ore ground compound called kohl. It was originally used as protection against eye ailments. There was also a belief that darkening around the eyes would protect one from the harsh rays of the sun. This is much like football players with their eyeblack.

These were primitive and effective ways of deflecting blinding glare. This is exactly what polarized lenses do. Polarized lenses are extremely popular and cut glare from reflective surfaces like water, tarmac, glass and shiny surfaces. For years outdoor sportsmen have enjoyed the advantage that these lenses give them. They block blinding glare and greatly enhance visual acuity, color contrast and comfort. I say this all the time “There is just no substitution for quality polarized lenses”.

Not everyone can enjoy the comfort of polarized lenses. Pilots are not able to wear them due to the LCD screens on the planes controls. You may also have trouble viewing the cell phone, GPS or the ATM. However, for most other sports and activities, polarized sunglasses offer great advantages. And today, many polarized lenses are available in combination with other features that can enhance outdoor experiences.

Consider Serengeti Sunglasses with their Photochromic and Polarized lenses. The combination of those two technologies makes them truly a stand out brand. I also am impressed with Julbo’s Camel, Falcon and Octopus lenses which boast Polarization, Photochromic and anti-fog lenses among other features.

Let’s imagine what Hatshepsut would look like admiring her dazzling new obelisk in the temple of Karnak 3 thousand years ago with polarized lenses.

Ray-Ban Caravan Sunglasses

September 22nd, 2010

Doing online shopping for sunglasses is always something fun to do. To my surprise I found a pair of Ray-Ban Sunglasses I just had to get.

I was very familiar with the Ray-Ban Aviator and the different styles it came in, but the Ray-Ban Caravan was a little different. It is almost the same concept as the aviator but the lenses are square. They are still comfortable and lightweight. While also carrying their infamous crystal green lens. This was a great choice for me because I was not a fan of the tear drop lenses the aviator carries. I am still able to have the same quality lenses and carry a legendary model by Ray-Ban. This particular model has an all purpose use. You are able to use it while driving, going for a walk, or watching a favorite outdoor activity. The affordable price is another plus for these and the fact that they are prescription friendly allows them to be more versatile to those who need a prescription.

Now you can have a great style of sunglasses if the aviator is not for you. If you have a chance to try them out you will know what I mean.

Martha’s New Sunglasses

September 15th, 2010

Imagine. Running along Lake Michigan with a light sweater, sweat pants and a White Sox cap.

That description would be of my friend Martha, running along the beach front enjoying the weather and finding sometime to think about anything at all. It cannot be all good Martha. The sun is bright and the reflection of the water is making you squint, a car is also driving by and the wax job it received is noticeable with the harsh glare ruining your train of thought.

These are very noticable symptoms of what happens when you decide to go play a sport, walk, or even when you are doing a marathon for a good cause. There is a secret to all this.

Sunglasses. The very thing that will help make this run perfect for Martha. It is not just any sunglasses, no, you have to select the lenses that will fit the condition you are running in.

I have come across the Julbo Run Sunglasses which have something called a Camel Lens. The technology of this lens is amazing. Not only is it polarized, which eliminates those harsh glares, it is also both photochromic and anti-fogging. I personally like the photochromic part because it will change darkness whether you are inside or outside. So no matter if you are running indoors or before the sun comes up it still adapts to those conditions.

Bolle also has their versions of the Bolle Parole and Bolle Vigilante which have interchangable lenses and allow you to change them for different sports such as tennis, golfing, even for just going on a walk.

Regardless of what style is best for you, make sure you are protecting yourself in all ways. Especially your eyes. Those are the most important.

Happy running Martha!

Sunglasses for Fall?

September 14th, 2010

I love the fall. Sure the summer is great but fall fashion is so cool. Sweaters, Jackets, Jeans and of course Sunglasses all make fall great. Many people don’t think of sunglasses outside of the summer months. Well the sun is still out and working hard against your skin and eyes.

I sometimes think that people take their eyes for granted. It’s a shame because we only have 2. Sunglasses not are only for protecting your eyes against harmful UV light but are very useful against fall winds blowing particulate matter into your eyes. People with fair complexions and light eye should especially take care to prevent sun damage to their eyes.

Remember that OpticsPlanet carries the largest selection of sunglasses online and they are constantly changing and improving their stock. You will need at least one pair for every jacket and coat that you plan on wearing this season. Their collection also includes sunglasses and goggles for every sport. Walking With Confidence

August 31st, 2010

Make everyone stare at you.

Emma Stone portrays a very risqué role in the new upcoming film called “Easy A.” Her style in this movie playing a high school student makes her even more likable. You see her walking down a hallway wearing a black corset like dress embroidered with a letter ‘A.’

She is also wearing these great sunglasses that compliment almost everyone’s face. The star is wearing what is known as the Ray-Ban Wayfarer. This is one of Ray-Ban’s most popular models of sunglasses that have been around for decades.

Since the early 1950s we have been graced by a popular model from Ray-Ban that has been so versatile to the fashion world. By simply implementing different colors and designs it has kept its popularity.

Do you require a prescription? These frames will compliment a prescription for those that require one, which makes them that much more attainable. You can verify with our Eyewear Specialists over at OpticsPlanet.com if you feel that your prescription will not work. Â You can also reach us at 800-504-5897 and select option number 5.

The specific ones that we believe she is wearing are the Ray-Ban New Wayfarer Sunglasses RB 2132 in the black frame with a gray lens. That is only one of combinations available in this style.

Be sure to check these out and with confidence we can say we know you will make the same impression Emma Stone makes in her new movie.

You get what you pay for

August 11th, 2010

It’s summer. There are street fairs, festivals, gas stations and even kiosks at the mall. They all have something in common. They are trying to sell you sunglasses for 5 dollars or 3 for 10. Last week I even heard a man yelling “buy one get 2 free”. I actually laughed out loud. I try not to be a snob so I walked over and took a look at his wares. I saw many a Ray-Ban and Prada sunglasses knock-offs.

I used to tell myself that I didn’t deserve expensive sunglasses because I lose them or I break them. Then I stopped and thought; if I spend a lot for a good pair of sunglasses I will take care of them.

There is so much to consider when buying sunglasses. Look for authenticity if you are into brand names. Most authorized retailers should have a card or warranty information to prove the products legitimacy. Consider the technology of the lenses as well. Whether you are an intense sportsmen that needs a fog-proof lens or a fisherman that would like to get polarized lenses. Maybe you just want a lens that will adjust to the constant light changes even behind the windshield of your car. We only have 2 eyes and protection is the key. There are better materials the can even withstand high velocity particles. Frames have even come a long way. Some frames have shock absorption and some can even be twisted without breaking. It’s about features and benefits. Consider Julbo, Wiley-X and 7Eye sunglasses just to name a few. All this can be done but it’s worth more than 5 dollars.

Treat yourself. Buy a pair of good sunglasses and you will see the difference. If you don’t believe me try a friends on, if they will let you.

We want to help you find the perfect Sunglasses

August 4th, 2010

Sunglasses aren’t just for looking fly, but also provide necessary UV protection to protect your eyes and skin from the sun. Whether you need prescription sunglasses or just off the rack sunglasses, choosing the right sunglasses can keep your eyes healthy.

Sunglasses are definitely important for sun protection and the eye health; they are also a fashion statement. Your sunglasses should not only be comfortable and stylish, but they should also be flattering to your face. You can order from online companies that offer hassle free return policies or you can even make a stop by the optical shop, look at various styles and shop for your sunglasses. Once you find the perfect fit you will be able to order your prescription sunglasses without any worry.

Some experts suggest that your frames should contrast with the shape of your face. If your face is very angular, select rounder frames for your sunglasses, and if you have a round face, a more angular frame will be more flattering. Your frame size should be in scale with your face size. Avoid very large sunglasses if you have a very small face, and vice-versa. Select frame and lens colors that flatter your complexion. Warmer skin tones will be better suited by warm tones, like gold, bronze, brown and tortoiseshell. Cooler skin tones will be more flattered by sunglasses in shades of silver, gray or blue.opplanet-smith-optics-breakbeat-sunglasses-tortoise-frame-brown-lense.jpg

I feel technology is often times more important than brand or style. Certain brands raise the bar and they combine style, protection and a famous name. I have a large head so large lenses is what I look for. Not only that; I want polarized lenses that block harsh glare. Light bounces off object such as roads, cars and water. The filter in polarized lenses blocks this type of intense reflected light, reducing glare. AR coating is a very advanced feature to look for. Anti-reflective coating (also called AR coating or anti-glare coating) improves both your vision through your lenses and the appearance of your glasses. AR coating is applied to the backside of the lens and will prevent that mirror image of your eyes you often see in very dark sunglasses. It’s actually several layers of metal oxides applied to the lens surfaces. Depending on your interest’s hobbies and the sport usage of your sunglasses, the color is very important. I have gray for the bright days, gray or green are the darkest lens available. Brown is great for medium to low light. Orange, yellow and rust lenses are perfect for contrast and highlighting on cloudy days. So many colors for so many applications.

What ever you look for when buying you shades we carry it all. Whether you shop by brand, our eyewear store carry many of today’s authentic designer brand names. If shape and size is your concern, try them on. We offer 30 days to purchase them and try them on, if they don’t work exchange them for something else. If technology is most important to you, well then, check EyewearPlanet.com and OpticsPlanet.com out. We have Eyewear Specialist that will open your eyes to a whole new world. Call us today.

Correction vs. Protection

July 27th, 2010

Sometimes finding prescription sunglasses can be frustrating. I have found that ophthalmic eyeglasses are for correction and sunglasses are primarily for protection. The problem can occur when these two ideas meet.

Not every frame works with everyone’s prescription. People with high astigmatism should choose a flat frame as a wrapped frame will cause blurriness and distortion. Every frame has a limit and that limit has to do with how curve or flat the frame is and whether the frame is conducive to your prescription. If you want wrapped prescription sunglasses, there are some manufacturers who offer wraparounds with less extreme curves. However they are still subject to a limited prescription range, it is better to discuss with the optician or a qualified specialist about which frame is right for you. Sometime people have to settle for regular ophthalmic frames with tinted lenses.

Today the trends are large lenses and extreme wraps. This is good if your prescription is within plus or minus 2.00. The rest of us have to pay attention to the limitation of the frames. A good rule to go by: the higher your prescription and the more correction needs you have, the smaller the lenses should be and flatter the frame.

Prada Sunglasses Upgraded, Tyler style.

July 2nd, 2010

Summer is here, and it’s official. Cookouts, cold beer and cool shades; the 3 C’s. My best buddy loves Prada sunglasses. He recently found out that his perfect vision is no longer perfect. I’ll be honest I don’t feel sorry for him. I am a -5.00 in each eye he’s only -.25. He has it so easy. He can still wear his really cool Prada sunglasses and even with prescription lenses in them. Why his prescription has anything to do with it is because the higher the prescription the more limitations there are. Tyler doesn’t have to worry about the curvature of the frames causing blurriness and distortion.

He was disappointed that his Prada Sunglasses PS50IS from the Prada Linea Rossa eyewear collection would hardly be worn again, only if he was wearing contacts. I hooked him up. I found the Prada Prescription Sunglasses PS50IS and his fears subsided. Not only did he get the same sharp frame but he was able to enhance the value by upgrading the lens. He ordered polycarbonate lenses that are scratch resistant and block UV rays. They are also light weight which is good for a frame this large. Tyler brought it to a whole new level by ordering polarized lenses. Polarized lenses have a filter that blocks blinding glare from light bouncing off of surfaces e.g. the road, the dashboard, windshield and other cars. What he realized was that polarization greatly enhances visual acuity, color contrast and comfort. No other lens or treatment can perform this awesome function. Polarization just can’t be substituted. I work in the eyewear business and I can tell we spend a lot of time together because he also included anti-reflection or AR coating. I was impressed. AR coating is a great feature that removes annoying reflections and ghost images that can be noticed when wearing dark polarized sunglasses. This is applied on the back side of the lenses of sunglasses and on both sides of clear ophthalmic eyewear.

Who said prescription sunglasses had to be boring? Just like the series “Pimp my ride”, well Tyler pimped his Prada sunglasses. He made them 10 times better. 10 time more valuable and made me very proud in the process. I really can’t stand him.
