It’s summer. There are street fairs, festivals, gas stations and even kiosks at the mall. They all have something in common. They are trying to sell you sunglasses for 5 dollars or 3 for 10. Last week I even heard a man yelling “buy one get 2 free”. I actually laughed out loud. I try not to be a snob so I walked over and took a look at his wares. I saw many a Ray-Ban and Prada sunglasses knock-offs.

I used to tell myself that I didn’t deserve expensive sunglasses because I lose them or I break them. Then I stopped and thought; if I spend a lot for a good pair of sunglasses I will take care of them.

There is so much to consider when buying sunglasses. Look for authenticity if you are into brand names. Most authorized retailers should have a card or warranty information to prove the products legitimacy. Consider the technology of the lenses as well. Whether you are an intense sportsmen that needs a fog-proof lens or a fisherman that would like to get polarized lenses. Maybe you just want a lens that will adjust to the constant light changes even behind the windshield of your car. We only have 2 eyes and protection is the key. There are better materials the can even withstand high velocity particles. Frames have even come a long way. Some frames have shock absorption and some can even be twisted without breaking. It’s about features and benefits. Consider Julbo, Wiley-X and 7Eye sunglasses just to name a few. All this can be done but it’s worth more than 5 dollars.

Treat yourself. Buy a pair of good sunglasses and you will see the difference. If you don’t believe me try a friends on, if they will let you.

Sunglasses aren’t just for looking fly, but also provide necessary UV protection to protect your eyes and skin from the sun. Whether you need prescription sunglasses or just off the rack sunglasses, choosing the right sunglasses can keep your eyes healthy.

Sunglasses are definitely important for sun protection and the eye health; they are also a fashion statement. Your sunglasses should not only be comfortable and stylish, but they should also be flattering to your face. You can order from online companies that offer hassle free return policies or you can even make a stop by the optical shop, look at various styles and shop for your sunglasses. Once you find the perfect fit you will be able to order your prescription sunglasses without any worry.

Some experts suggest that your frames should contrast with the shape of your face. If your face is very angular, select rounder frames for your sunglasses, and if you have a round face, a more angular frame will be more flattering. Your frame size should be in scale with your face size. Avoid very large sunglasses if you have a very small face, and vice-versa. Select frame and lens colors that flatter your complexion. Warmer skin tones will be better suited by warm tones, like gold, bronze, brown and tortoiseshell. Cooler skin tones will be more flattered by sunglasses in shades of silver, gray or blue.

I feel technology is often times more important than brand or style. Certain brands raise the bar and they combine style, protection and a famous name. I have a large head so large lenses is what I look for. Not only that; I want polarized lenses that block harsh glare. Light bounces off object such as roads, cars and water. The filter in polarized lenses blocks this type of intense reflected light, reducing glare. AR coating is a very advanced feature to look for. Anti-reflective coating (also called AR coating or anti-glare coating) improves both your vision through your lenses and the appearance of your glasses. AR coating is applied to the backside of the lens and will prevent that mirror image of your eyes you often see in very dark sunglasses. It’s actually several layers of metal oxides applied to the lens surfaces. Depending on your interest’s hobbies and the sport usage of your sunglasses, the color is very important. I have gray for the bright days, gray or green are the darkest lens available. Brown is great for medium to low light. Orange, yellow and rust lenses are perfect for contrast and highlighting on cloudy days. So many colors for so many applications.

What ever you look for when buying you shades we carry it all. Whether you shop by brand, our eyewear store carry many of today’s authentic designer brand names. If shape and size is your concern, try them on. We offer 30 days to purchase them and try them on, if they don’t work exchange them for something else. If technology is most important to you, well then, check EyewearPlanet.com and OpticsPlanet.com out. We have Eyewear Specialist that will open your eyes to a whole new world. Call us today.

Sometimes finding prescription sunglasses can be frustrating. I have found that ophthalmic eyeglasses are for correction and sunglasses are primarily for protection. The problem can occur when these two ideas meet.

Not every frame works with everyone’s prescription. People with high astigmatism should choose a flat frame as a wrapped frame will cause blurriness and distortion. Every frame has a limit and that limit has to do with how curve or flat the frame is and whether the frame is conducive to your prescription. If you want wrapped prescription sunglasses, there are some manufacturers who offer wraparounds with less extreme curves. However they are still subject to a limited prescription range, it is better to discuss with the optician or a qualified specialist about which frame is right for you. Sometime people have to settle for regular ophthalmic frames with tinted lenses.

Today the trends are large lenses and extreme wraps. This is good if your prescription is within plus or minus 2.00. The rest of us have to pay attention to the limitation of the frames. A good rule to go by: the higher your prescription and the more correction needs you have, the smaller the lenses should be and flatter the frame.

Summer is here, and it’s official. Cookouts, cold beer and cool shades; the 3 C’s. My best buddy loves Prada sunglasses. He recently found out that his perfect vision is no longer perfect. I’ll be honest I don’t feel sorry for him. I am a -5.00 in each eye he’s only -.25. He has it so easy. He can still wear his really cool Prada sunglasses and even with prescription lenses in them. Why his prescription has anything to do with it is because the higher the prescription the more limitations there are. Tyler doesn’t have to worry about the curvature of the frames causing blurriness and distortion.

He was disappointed that his Prada Sunglasses PS50IS from the Prada Linea Rossa eyewear collection would hardly be worn again, only if he was wearing contacts. I hooked him up. I found the Prada Prescription Sunglasses PS50IS and his fears subsided. Not only did he get the same sharp frame but he was able to enhance the value by upgrading the lens. He ordered polycarbonate lenses that are scratch resistant and block UV rays. They are also light weight which is good for a frame this large. Tyler brought it to a whole new level by ordering polarized lenses. Polarized lenses have a filter that blocks blinding glare from light bouncing off of surfaces e.g. the road, the dashboard, windshield and other cars. What he realized was that polarization greatly enhances visual acuity, color contrast and comfort. No other lens or treatment can perform this awesome function. Polarization just can’t be substituted. I work in the eyewear business and I can tell we spend a lot of time together because he also included anti-reflection or AR coating. I was impressed. AR coating is a great feature that removes annoying reflections and ghost images that can be noticed when wearing dark polarized sunglasses. This is applied on the back side of the lenses of sunglasses and on both sides of clear ophthalmic eyewear.

Who said prescription sunglasses had to be boring? Just like the series “Pimp my ride”, well Tyler pimped his Prada sunglasses. He made them 10 times better. 10 time more valuable and made me very proud in the process. I really can’t stand him.

There are a lot of unanswered questions out there like, what is at Area 51? Or who killed JFK? Or who shot JR from Dallas. There are two questions I hear all the time; how do I size the Ray-Ban Wayfarer and which size is right for me? Now those are tough ones. Heck, we have even dedicated OpticsPlanet forums and blogs to the topics.

I love History! Let’s start with the history of the Ray-Ban Wayfarer. The design was first produced in 1952 by Ray-Ban. They came up with a new groundbreaking style that changed the eyewear world forever. In the past sunglasses and eyeglasses were made with metal frames. They introduced the plastic molded frame that reminds people of the classic Cadillac fin of the 1950’s and 60’s. It’s a signature look of the era. The hype declined in the 1970’s but the Wayfarer wasn’t going away quietly. Ray-Ban placed the Wayfarer in movies and commercials causing the Pepsi generation to take a new look at this unique frame. Now that’s what I call marketing! Today the excitement is still there. JFK, Bob Dylan, Don Johnson and Tom Cruise all wore Ray-Ban wayfarers. So now it’s your turn.

Model numbers such as the Ray-Ban RB2140 called the Original Wayfarer offers sizes 50 and 54mm with the temple length of 150mm. The distance between the lenses is 22mm and 18mm. This style is more traditional. There is the New Wayfarer RB2132 with the lenses sizes of 52 and 55mm. Both sizes have a DBL of 18mm and the temple length is 145mm. There is another Ray-Ban Wayfarer that is called the Folding Wayfarer RB4105. This one is cool because it folds at the bridge and the middle of the temples for a compact result. This is perfect for the stylish person on the go. You can stow them away in a shirt pocket or purse. The RB4105 is the exact same size as the RB2140. Ray-Ban suggests that you that the lens size, multiply it by two and then add the distance between the lenses. For example take the RB2140; 50+50+22=122mm. This is not an exact science but it gives you an “approximate” idea. It’s always better to try them on. Here is a cheat sheet for you:

The Larger Wayfarer: Ray Ban RB2140: 54mm lens size

The Medium Wayfarer: Ray Ban RB2140: 50mm lens size

The Smaller Wayfarer: Ray Ban RB2132: 52mm lens size

Of course this is just a cheat sheet. The best way to figure out if a frame is right for you is to put them on your face. OpticsPlanet has them, order them and try them on. Experience tradition and make a statement. The Ray-Ban Wayfarer comes in several colors and original prints. Eyewear is fashion and just like your clothes they have to fit just right.

What did I tell you!! I had no doubts that Blackhawks would win!! I was at the bar watching the game the whole night. It was so intense that I bit all my nails off :). We could not hear a thing when the game started, but after the 3rd goal that Flyers made the whole bar went dead. People were really quiet watching the overtime. When Patrick Kane made that goal the place went wild. I, personally, lost my voice and can’t talk today. People were dancing on tables, taking pictures with people they don’t even know, hugging and kissing each other. It was beautiful! The city was even crazier last night. Fireworks were everywhere. People were running around and giving high fives to people in the cars. It was amazing! I am sure we have more seasons like that coming!!! I wish I was there today meeting the team when they came home. I heard Blackhawks let their fans touch the Stanley Cup. This is what I call a real team with a real spirit! Go Chicago Blackhawks!

And guess what! I am getting my <ins dateTime="2010-06-10T18:52:25+00:00">Ray Ban sunglasses</ins>! So far the game has been pretty intense, but I am sure that by the end of today I will get a brand new pair of Ray Bans.

I used to hate wearing my glasses when I was a kid. When I look at my old school pictures (pre-contacts) I see why. They are hideous and not to mention very large. When I was 14 my mother told me I could start wearing contacts because she thought I would be able to handle the care and responsibility that goes along with being a contact wearer. I did pretty well and didn’t let her down. As I grew into an adult I got pretty lazy about it. I no longer wore my prescription eyeglasses and relied heavily on my contacts. I wore them from the time I woke up to the time I went to bed because I hated the way I looked in eyeglasses. I would even wear the 2 week disposable contacts for a month to save money. What I didn’t realize is that our eyes need a break, but I didn’t care.

Now I am older and wiser (not to mention I work in the Eyewear Department at OpticsPlanet, Inc.) I have discovered that eyewear has changed, trends have changed. I can’t believe the amount of people that wear eyeglasses for fun. Often times they wear them without the need of vision correction. Ten years ago I would have thought that was ridiculous. Glasses are geeky no more! They are now accessories that not only correct our vision but also portray our personalities in a fun way! I mean look at all the celebs out there that are sporting them!

So I started to look at glasses much differently. They are attractive now. But most importantly I learned that paying for a great pair of ophthalmic glasses is more effective than paying for contacts every ninety days. First the hard part was finding the perfect frame for my face. I found a great pair that blends in on my face. It’s important that the person you are talking to sees my eyes not the glasses covering my eyes. There are even clear frames especially for this reason. This is helped by extra lens coatings as well. I finally decided to make my first pair of glasses in several years the Police 8148 Prescription Eyeglasses. I got so many compliments and I think Police eyeglasses were genuine. And comedian/writer Jim Gaffigan once said “The only advantage to wearing glasses is that you can do the dramatic removal.” That is so true

Choosing the lens material and coatings was easy. You get what you pay for! I wanted clear polycarbonate because of its scratch resistance and the UV blockage is provides. The recommended sphere range is +/- 2.00-8.00, so I knew they wouldn’t be too thick. I requested the AR (non-glare) coating because it would enhance optical quality by removing reflections and ghost images. It even reduces light transmission and is so important when night driving.

My issue with eyeglasses was simply vanity. But my eyes have been opened so to speak. See for yourself; take a look at all the nice frames we have to offer here at OpticsPlanet.com. Your eyes will thank me.
