Valentine’s is shrouded deeply in folklore and liturgical celebration (Catholic public service or duty). Several martyrdom stories stretching back to Roman persecution of Christians were attached to the various early Christian saints named Valentinus. The day was first associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages (c. 1001–1300), when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their feelings for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards known as “valentines”. Valentine’s Day symbols that are used today include the hearts, doves, and the figure of the winged Eros.
